Back in 1996, as one of the leaders in mechanical binding equipment, SPIEL
ASSOCIATES found a need for automatic plastic coil inserters. "All of our
customers were complaining about the labor intensiveness of coil binding," says
Norton Spiel. "I thought the best design would be to form and insert at the
same time but since formers were readily available, we turned to inserters. In
1996 we invented the first Sterling Coilmaster and sold it to E & M
Bindery, which was then in New York." "We were knocked out when we saw it run
in production for the first time. The operator was getting about 400 books per
hour," declares David Spiel. Still, there were improvements to be made. The
first Coilmaster had no spreader. This meant that the margin (the distance
between the first hole & the head or foot of the book) could not exceed the
bridge (the distance between the holes).
A SPREADER IS BORN
"Sometimes the margins were so razor thin, the job was rejected," states Saul
Spiel. "We knew we had to come up with something and rather than have everyone
buy brand new dies and hope that the pattern fit within the confines of the
book, we came up with a spreading device." This patented device causes the coil
to jump into the first and out of the last hole, even if the margin is larger
than the pitch. "We feel it is our job to change the machine to fit the job
rather than change the job to fit the machine," says Michael Spiel. The
spreader caused a quantum leap in the quality of the books. Binders no longer
had to trim the books down, use oval holes, or punch close to the edge as they
had in the past or have to do now with other automatic coil machines."
ANGLING FOR PRODUCTIVITY
Now that binding the book was solved, SPIEL ASSOCIATES part new in-feed
conveyor. The new COILMASTER II PLASTIC COIL BINDING SYSTEM debuted at Graph
Expo '99. "Next we tried to bump up the average of books bound per hour from
400 to 500," states David Spiel. The insertion roller used to move in and out.
This took time. Our technicians found that if we angled the roller, the machine
did not have to wait for the roller to move in and out. This brought the speed
up to over 600 BPH. We anxiously look forward to the premier of the COILMASTER
III at DRUPA '04" The Sterling Coilmaster II is the only patented in-line coil
former/inserter in the US.
